Through the wonderful generosity of Martin Bishop and the late Hazel Bishop, as well as the Parents and class 7 children of Ellen Key Skolan of Sweden, our class 7 children were able to visit to Robben Island.
Visit to Robben Island by Natashia Mkrola
On Friday 21st February 2014 we went to Cape Town by bus to visit Robben island.I was so excited because I have always wanted to visit the place where Nelson Mandela stayed for many years.I didn't realise that I would have to get onto a big boat to get there though! It was quite windy and the water was rough and I was scared. It was all worthwhile and very interesting. We travelled around the island on a big bus and we also saw Nelson Mandela’s cell.
Then we met a man called Zozo, who had also been a prisoner on the island. He showed us around and took us to see a cell.In the cell the prisoners had to sleep on the floor. They got 4 blankets and two mats.It was very cold in the cell. They then got beds and were no longer sleeping on the floor. The man then told us how they were punished, they were locked in a room without any food or water. The prisoners worked with limestone and it affected Nelson Mandela’s eyes, and if they had blisters on their hands and asked to see a doctor they would be told they were lazy and punished.
