Grace, with her mother, father and baby brother
GRACE
KAMUNDI
Grace Kamundi was born in Malawi on 24 July 2007. She
moved with her mother and father to Hermanus in 2009, and joined the Hermanus
Waldorf School Kindergarten in 2012. Her father, Gaba, is a gardener and her
mother, Ruth, a domestic worker. They live in a cottage on a farm in the
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
On 25 June 2013 she was admitted to the Tygerberg
Hospital with an abdominal mass noted by her mother. She was diagnosed with a
type of cancer of the kidney, nephroblastoma, also known as Wilms tumour.
She started chemotherapy on 8 July 2013 at the oncology
department in Tygerberg. Her one kidney was recently removed. She cannot attend
school any longer, due to her suppressed immunity caused by the chemotherapy
treatment. Her teacher has said she can come to school whenever she is feeling
stronger, even if it is just for a visit. She misses her school friends very
much.
Grace is now staying at home, and she goes for
chemotherapy twice a month. She has a
new baby brother, Renzo, who is one month old.
